{Five Minute Friday} Bare

I'm participating in Five Minute Friday, a link-up writing prompt at Lisa-Jo Baker's blog. This week the prompt is "Bare ...

Five minutes starts now. GO ...

Usually when I volunteer at Cate's school, I help with making copies, cutting pieces for preschool craft projects, or other administrative-type chores. This is much more in line with my strengths than in-classroom projects. There also was that time I decorated a door. Whew.

Today I did some copying and cutting, but I also sat with the four kindergartners and listened as they read books. It was my girl and three boys. And I loved the sweet sound of their voices speaking the words. Some words came out naturally, others were newer and created some verbal stumbles.

And I had the fleeting thought about how hard our language probably seems to these new readers. Take homophones, for instance.

Like bare. And bear.

There are so many that come up in their little books. Red/read. Won/one. Blue/blue. Two/too/to. There/their/they're.

But they're learning. Reading, like most anything in life, is a process. It's such a skill that even now is changing their lives. They can read signs. And books. Their world is opening.

STOP.
